GRAND CANAL DOCK
Taking its name from the waterway that once played a crucial role in Dublin’s industrial development, Grand Canal Square, in the heart of Dublin’s revitalised Docklands district, is an area where past and future coalesce, a striking example of modern urban design harmoniously blending with the city’s industrial heritage.
The square was designed by American landscape artist Martha Schwartz and opened in 2008. Its most distinctive feature is the red ‘carpet’ made of bright red resin-glass paving covered with red glowing angled light sticks. The square is framed by sleek glass buildings. Its architecture, marked by clean lines and minimalist aesthetics, conveys both sophistication and a forward-looking sensibility, making it one of Dublin’s most cosmopolitan quarters.
At the centre of the square lies Grand Canal Basin, whose still water reflects the surrounding structures, including the iconic Daniel Libeskin-designed Bord Gáis Energy and Anantara The Marker hotel, designed by Dublin practise MDO Architects. The Marker is the anchor venue for Design Week Dublin.
